Digitalization as Basic Infrastructure – Ministries Must Simplify Processes
Digital infrastructure is not only an economic factor, but a fundamental prerequisite for social participation. Mona Neubaur, Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, emphasized that approval and permitting procedures must be simplified urgently in order to make expansion more efficient. At the same time, it is essential to ensure that everyone has access to basic digital services—regardless of place of residence or social background.
Düsseldorf Focuses on Fibre Optics – A Strategic Shift Since 2020
In the past, Düsseldorf primarily relied on copper-based infrastructure. However, since 2020, the city has been systematically advancing fibre-optic expansion, explained Olaf Wagner, City Councillor responsible for Human Resources, Organization, Digitalization and Citizen Services. By the end of 2025, around 50 percent of all households and businesses in the city are expected to have access to a fibre-optic connection—an important step for both regional competitiveness and quality of life.
